Top of the Class – Two New Movable
Pool Floors for School & Community Aquatic Centre
|
|
|
A public pool is more than just a place to splash
around: it's a community space that must cater to a wide range of
swimmers and activities, often at the same time.
From swim lessons to aquafitness classes, operators know that the
configuration of traditional public pools is constantly in flux: lane
markers are moved to and fro, and whistles are blown to signal the
start of a new activity.
Recently, though, many aquatic facilities have taken a new approach to
providing a safe and skill-appropriate swimming experience for their
visitors: movable pool floors that can be adjusted to different depths.
Below, we'll be showcasing a facility that decided to level-up the
flexibility of its aquatic spaces to better serve its community.

The Project
In partnership with Akvo, Swiss manufacturer elevo recently completed
an ambitious project for Cycle d'orientation de la Glâne (COG), a
school in Romont, Switzerland. During school hours, all students have
access to Epicentre Glâne, a recreation centre operated by the school
and located just a stone's throw away from campus.
Outfitted with stately windows that bathe the indoor area with light,
the Epicentre is home to four separate pools: a 25-metre lap pool, a
9-metre by 13.5-metre beginner pool, a diving pool for athletic
training, and a shallow wading pool for its littlest swimmers.
Elevo and Akvo were brought on to help transform two of these pools
into versatile, multifunctional aquatic spaces. Specifically, Epicentre
wanted to implement preset pool depths for a wide range of activities
including aquabike lessons in the beginner pool, as well as to increase
flexibility of the 25-metre pool to accommodate a diverse array of
aquatic activities in safe, tailored water depths.
• A movable pool floor was installed in one half of the 25-metre pool,
with a pivoting ramp connecting the two levels
• A smaller movable pool floor spans the entire beginner pool offering
a consistent, uniform depth throughout.
• In both cases, the pool shell, structure, and floor finish are
constructed of stainless steel, complete with integrated plastic
swimming lines

Transforming a
Community
With their movable pool floors up and running, Epicentre is not only
able to provide better swimming experiences for COG students, but also
for the community at large! This rec centre welcomes students from
schools across the region, as well as local individuals and families
who want to enjoy a leisurely dip.
During the day, students and the public swim side-by-side, with
additional activities available after the final school bell rings. From
sunrise ‘til sunset, Epicentre de la Glâne is buzzing with activity
– and thanks to elevo and Akvo, it can now serve its community
better than ever before.
